Puppy Go Home Day

Congratulations! Your new best friend is coming home.

The First Night

What to expect

Your puppy's first night away from their mom, siblings, and everything they've ever known will be tough. Although we give our puppies a head start to potty and crate training, puppy training is highly situational. Crying, whining, and accidents are to be expected.

Our puppies usually sleep through the night without accidents prior to leaving home. However, if they wake up during the first few nights, take puppy out to potty. Praise them with a treat once they potty outdoors. Make sure their crate is only big enough for puppy to stand and turn around comfortably. If it's any bigger, puppy will likely have accidents.

Potty training

Potty training requires consistency, patience, and a strict routine. We take our puppies out to potty every 3-4 hours, and immediately after waking, playing, and eating. Praise your puppy after going outside with a treat. Do not punish puppy if they have an accident. This can make them fearful of you, and cause them to hide to potty.

Supervise your puppy, and don't let them free roam. Block off any carpet areas, as puppies love to potty on carpets. It's always good to have an enzyme cleaner on hand.

Watch for cues like whining, circling, sniffing, or scratching door.

Have a constant feeding schedule for your puppy. Set a timer if you need the reminder. We do not feed or give water after 6pm to avoid overnight accidents.

What not to worry about

Every puppy adjusts to their own pace, but many follow a similar rhythm known as The Rule of 3.

3 Days

It takes 3 days for a puppy to decompress. They may feel overwhelmed scared, and may not want to eat or play. You might notice extra sleep, shyness, crying, or loose stools due to stress.

* Please note that although we run a fecal for each litter and they are usually clear (no parasites), stress may can cause flare ups. It's important to regularly deworm your puppy and pick up stools daily.

3 weeks

It takes 3 weeks for a puppy to learn your routine. They will start to feel more comfortable, and their personality begins to emerge as they realize they are in their forever home.

3 months

It takes 3 months to start to feel at home. They will build trust and gain security. Your pup will understand routines and expectations.
